Letter from Director ...

Dear Parent,

I want to extend a warm welcome to you on behalf of Positive Alternative. This is an exciting time at the school, and I would like to share some of the current news with you.

First, as you can see, we are proud to unveil our brand-new website! We hope this will be useful for families who want to keep track of upcoming field trips, events, or other news. On the first page, we encourage parents to check the “News and Events” section frequently. If you have something to post for the school community, just call or send an email.

The site also provides introductory information for parents who may be looking for a day care or preschool for their little ones, and who want to learn about our school. As you'll see from the pages throughout the site, the environment at Positive Alternative is very family-oriented and nurturing. Under the experienced guidance of devoted teachers, your son or daughter will be at home with the right balance of learning, play, fun, guidance, and discovery – elements we believe are the building blocks to a happy and healthy childhood. We encourage you to call or visit in order to learn more.

School Readiness Grant

Along with our children, Positive Alternative is also continually growing and improving. Early in 2009, Positive Alternative was awarded a School Readiness Grant from the Arapahoe County Early Education Council. As a result of this innovative grant, the school has been able to make material improvements in every classroom that will boost literacy, math skills, science education, and many other areas of learning. A second grant will be providing new playground equipment, to be installed during the summer of 2009.

In addition to improving the school's physical surroundings and learning materials, the grant has provided expert evaluations and hands-on coaching to the teachers. Although every teacher was evaluated as “Outstanding” during the county's initial assessment, this coaching provides additional resources, tools and techniques regarding developmentally appropriate practices. The grant also provides safety seminars and other valuable learning opportunities for the staff. According to Cheri, who teaches the 3 ½ – 4-year-olds, this grant is “changing the face of the school.”

It's Summertime – do you know where your children are?

We want parents to know about our cool-school summer plans in case you still need to make plans for this summer, or to keep in mind for next summer. We maintain the same hours for daycare and preschool, but we accept children up to age eight. From mid-June through August our schedule flows with the weather, becoming more flexible and outdoors-oriented. Each week we swim, take field trips, and enjoy lots of dramatic play and arts & crafts. This summer we will be taking field trips to Four-Mile Historic Park, the Children's Museum, several plays at Aurora Fox Theater, local parks and swimming pools, and more. See our Summer Schedule for details on the exciting months ahead.

I look forward to seeing you and your children in the coming weeks, and as always, we welcome your feedback, questions, and ideas.
